Swallow's Nest

Further information

We use swallow's nest extract rich in sialic acid, which is extracted from natural swallow's nests in Thailand and refined in Japan.

Swallow's nests are among the most valued tonics and cosmetics in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They are a highly prized treasure in Asia. Swallow's nest extract used to be reserved only for high dignitaries such as emperors, nobles and royal families.

The laboratory-purified swallow's nests are said to have countless health-promoting properties.

After the swallow family leaves, new nests are built. From this point on, the abandoned nest is a gift from nature. Of course, the swallows' natural life cycle is preserved.

Film focus:

Swallow's nest is a very valuable food. In Chinese culture, it has a history of more than a thousand years. This particular swallow's nest comes from Southeast Asia. Swallows build a new nest for their offspring about three times a year. A new nest is created each time.

The swallows need about 45 days to build a new nest and seven days to lay eggs. After 15 days the young swallows hatch and after 45 to 50 days they leave the nest. All in all it takes about 110 days from the nest to the little swallow leaving the bird's nest.

In earlier times, harvesting swallows' nests was sometimes very dangerous and inhumane, as workers had to climb down into deep caves to collect them. As a result, the prices for swallows' nests rose to exorbitant levels.

Later, people improved the use of environmentally friendly methods for collecting swallow nests and built "hotels" for swallows to live in.

Only after the swallows have flown away can the nests be collected.

In the nature of the swallow's nest, the use of technology to simulate the environment of the cave allows the swallows to fly into the nest to feed the next generation.

The locals believe that we need to cultivate and care for the swallows in a humane way to keep them alive and eventually preserve their nest.

Supplementary explanation:

Once the swallows are fully grown, the nests are no longer of any use to the swallows, as the swallows build new nests each time they are pregnant. Not only does removing the nests cause no harm to the swallows, it actually creates space for new nests.
